Easy Kerala Style Pidi and Kozhi Curry Recipe

Pidi and Kozhi Curry

Popular in the Kottayam side of Kerala, this pidiyum kozhiyum is a traditional Knanaya dish offered to daughter in law by mother in law during the baby shower. This dish has gained wide popularity in recent times all because of the Instagram foodies. Here is the yummiest and easiest Pidi and Kozhi Curry recipe.

Ingredients for Pidi and Kozhi Curry

For Pidi:

  • 1.5c Rice Flour
  • 2c Water
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds

For grinding:

  • 1/2 c Grated Coconut
  • Few Shallots
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • Salt

To cook pidi:

  • 4c Water
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1c Coconut milk
  • Curry leaves
  • salt

For Kozhi Curry:

  • 2kg Chicken
  • 4 sliced Onions
  • Few Green chilies
  • 2tsp Crushed ginger
  • 2tsp Crushed Garlic
  • 2tsp Kashmiri Chilly Powder
  • 1 1/2tsp Coriander Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1tsp Pepper powder
  • 1tsp Garam Masala powder
  • 1tbsp Chicken Masala
  • 1tsp Fennel seeds powder
  • 2 Tomato
  • Salt
  • Water

For Tempering:

  • Coconut oil
  • Shallots
  • Curry leaves

How to make Pidi and Kozhi Curry:

To Prepare Pidis:

Step 1:

Coarse grind 1/2 c grated coconut, few shallots and 1/2 tsp cumin seeds and keep aside.

Step 2:

Boil 2 c water along with 1/4tsp cumin seeds and salt. Once the water starts boiling add the grinded coconut. Now add 1 1/2 c Rice powder to this boiling water and stir well into a dough.

Step 3:

Transfer this to a large plate and knead into soft dough. Be careful while kneading as the dough is very hot.

Step 4:

Now make small balls from this dough.

Step 5:

Take 4 balls in another bowl and mix with 1/2 c of water. Add this to 1 c of coconut milk and keep aside.

Step 6:

Now for cooking the pidis, boil 4c of water with 1/4 tsp cumin seeds and salt.

Step 7:

Once the water starts boiling drop the rice balls carefully into it. Cook for 10 mins. Now pour the prepared coconut milk mixture to this and boil till it thickens.
Switch off the flame. Once it cools down it gets more thickened. Add curry leaves.

To make Chicken Curry or Kozhi Curry:

Step 8:

In a pot heat coconut oil and saute 4 sliced onions. Add curry leaves and green chillies. Once the onions are transparent add crushed ginger and garlic, saute well.

Step 9:

Add the spices one by one and mix well. Once the raw smell of masala is gone add the tomatoes and mix well.

Step 10:

Add little water and mix. Now add the chicken and mix well. Cover and cook till the chicken is done.

Step 11:

Now in a small pan heat coconut oil and fry some chopped shallot. Add curry leaves. Pour this over the prepared curry.

Now Pidi and chicken curry both are ready.

Serve both in a plate and enjoy
